Elder Flower & Berry

Health benefits of the elder plant include naturally improving colds, the flu, sinus issues, nerve pain, inflammation, chronic fatigue, allergies.

Elderberries are an excellent general immune system booster. The berries contain chemical compounds called anthocyanidins, which are known to have immunostimulant effects.

The flowers of the elder plant are known to be an effective herbal allergy remedy. Since allergies involve an overreaction of the immune system as well as inflammation, elderberry’s ability to improve the immune system and calm inflammation can help provide allergy relief.

Elderflower is also said to act as a detoxification aid by enhancing liver function.

Eyebright ( Euphrasia officinalis ): This tiny plant are both astringent and anti-inflammatory, and decrease the hypersensitive response of the mucous membranes in the eyes, nose, throat, and ears. In other words, this herb is the perfect remedy for hay fever sufferers.

Quercetin

Quercetin is a natural antihistamine and an anti-inflammatory, making it effective for naturally lowering the effects of season and food allergies, plus asthma and skin reactions. Histamines are chemicals that are released when the immune system detects an allergy or sensitivity, and they are what account for uncomfortable symptoms we face whenever the body has an allergic reaction.

Quercetin can help stabilise the release of histamines from certain immune cells, which results in decreased symptoms like coughs, watery eyes, runny noses, hives, swollen lips or tongue, and indigestion. In fact, it’s so effective that it is used in ancient Chinese herbal formulas created to block allergies to certain foods (such as peanuts), known as food allergy herbal formulas. Studies show that quercetin is equivalent at fighting allergies to some prescription medications, all with little to no side effects.

Bromelain

Fights Allergies and Asthma

The journal Evidenced-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine highlighted the results of a study that investigated how bromelain affected subjects suffering from asthma. The study produced some interesting results — for example, that bromelain reduces allergic sensitisation and stops development of other inflammatory responses affecting the airways.

These findings suggests that this enzyme helps modulate the entire immune system. It can actually help prevent allergies by addressing the root cause — a hyperactive, oversensitive immune system. This is why it helps most people suffering from symptoms like a stuffy/runny nose, itchy eyes, swollen lymph nodes, congestion and trouble breathing.

Nettle

Histamine production in the body creates the adverse reactions related to allergies. Allergies cause uncomfortable congestion, sneezing, itching and more.

Stinging nettle’s anti-inflammatory qualities affect a number of key receptors and enzymes in allergic reactions, preventing hay fever symptoms if taken when they first appear. The leaves of the plant contain histamine (which may seem counterproductive in allergy treatment) but there is history of using histamines to treat severe allergic reactions.

There is also evidence that in severe reactions, low plasma histamine levels (as opposed to high levels) are present.

Artichokes contain a powerful antioxidant flavonoid silymarin, which is an effective liver protectant and cleanser. When the liver is cleansed, the body finds it easier to deal with

Vitamin B5, also known as pantothenic acid.

Allergy sufferers may find pantothenic acid beneficial for controlling the nasal congestion that can develop during an allergic reaction. Specifically when allergy sufferers who take pantothenic acid supplements before bed often find that their nasal stuffiness clears and they aren't awakened by excess mucus, stuffiness, or other allergy symptoms during the night.

Vitamin C is considered as a natural antihistamine and research suggests that it may help reduce allergy symptoms. It works by destroying the molecular structure of histamine, thereby decreasing the amount of histamine in the blood.

MSM

MSM has the ability to inhibit histamine response. When histamines are running rampant in the body, they can cause a variety of uncomfortable symptoms including environmental and seasonal allergies. The anti-inflammatory properties of MSM seem to block the receptivity of histamine in certain allergy sensitive tissues, such as the mucous membranes in our nasal pathways. Supplementing with MSM can help to reduce seasonal allergy discomforts and keep them under control.
